Who Are You Really Talking To?

Someone messaged me this week offering to take over my chats (I put a screenshot of the message below.) Their pitch went roughly like this: their two lead chatters have each generated over a million dollars in sales working for other agencies, they now offer 24/7 chat coverage on a revenue share with no upfront fee, and they handle daily conversations, sales, and fan follow-ups around the clock, with chats tailored to my personality.

I get a version of this message every few weeks. Different sender, same offer. Hand over your DMs, we will talk to your fans as you, and we take a cut of whatever they spend.

I said no, the way I always do. But the message stuck with me, because it says something out loud that most people who subscribe to creators like me have never been told. So I want to tell you.

Who you are actually talking to

When a creator replies to you within minutes at 3 a.m., and again at 9 a.m., and again at 2 p.m., and again at 11 p.m., every single day, there is a simple question worth asking. How, exactly, is one human being doing that?

She can't. Nobody can. A real person sleeps. A real person eats dinner, drives somewhere, loses her phone in the couch, has a bad day. Around-the-clock replies are a product, and the product is a team of hired chatters working in shifts.

Those chatters are paid on commission. Every tip, every unlocked video, every custom you buy puts money in the pocket of whoever typed the reply, and the agency sitting between them and the creator takes its share before she sees a dime. The person flirting with you is being paid to get you to spend, and their income depends on how well they do it.

And who is that person? You have no way of knowing. It might be a guy in his basement with four accounts open at once. It might be someone in a call center overseas working from a script and a notes file on your likes and dislikes. It might be whoever is on shift at that hour, picking up a conversation someone else started. The pitch I received even said the chats would be tailored to my personality, which tells you how it works: they study the creator enough to imitate her, then they do the talking.

I am not saying every creator runs her account this way. I am saying the practice is common enough that agencies cold-message creators like me to sell it, and that they pitch it as the normal, sensible thing to do. If the girl you subscribe to is available every hour of every day, this is the most likely explanation.

Why I sometimes take a while to write back

Some days, I'm on my phone and engaged in the chats quite a bit. Sometimes it takes me a couple of days. I understand why this can seem confusing, especially if you have been on other pages where the replies arrive faster than you can type.

The reason that my account works this way is that I am a real woman, and you are talking to me.

I get a period. There are days it flattens me and the last thing I want to do is be flirty with anyone. I have emotional days where I don't feel like talking to anyone and I would rather go quiet than send you something hollow. I have a husband, a dog, a home on wheels, a life that moves around the country. Some days the signal is bad. Some days I am out in the sun and the phone stays in the drawer.

When I do write back, it is me. Nobody is working a shift. Nobody is reading a notes file about you. Nobody is earning a commission on the conversation. If I am slow, it is because the person you are waiting on is a person.

What I actually love about this

I really enjoy my subscribers. I like getting to know you. Being naughty for you, yes, absolutely. That part is real and I have a lot of fun with it.

But I also like hearing about one subscriber's flock of sheep. I like hearing from another about his weightlifting sessions with his son. I have had deep, meaningful conversations with a doctor and his wife about life and marriage and what keeps two people close over the years.

A hired chatter would skip all of that, or fake interest in it long enough to steer toward a sale. I don't want to skip it. The sheep and the deadlifts and the long marriage conversations are the part that makes the rest of it mean something. When I send you something naughty, it comes from a woman who knows who you are.

That only works if it is actually me on the other end. The moment I hand my DMs to a team on commission, the naughty parts are still there, but the person is gone.

Real has a pace

I do this to be real and to have fun. Real comes with a period, with moods, with days off, with a reply that shows up tomorrow afternoon instead of tonight. Real is a woman who remembers your sheep. Real is slower than a call center, and I would rather be slow and be me than be instant and be nobody.
